Story behind the piece: Layers of red

I have always loved swans. There is something about them that feels almost sacred—their elegance, their gentleness, and the devotion they show toward one another.

I painted this swan in layers of red because, to me, red carries the warmth of love. It is the color of passion, devotion, and a heart that refuses to let go. Perhaps that is why we so often associate it with love.

Swans have long been seen as symbols of loyalty. When one is hurt, its mate may remain beside it rather than leaving when things become difficult. And when a mate is lost, a swan may grieve its absence. There is something beautiful in that kind of devotion—the choice to stay when staying is no longer easy.

In that way, I think swans mirror something within us. We long to be loved without conditions, to be chosen even in our brokenness, and to have someone remain when circumstances become hard.

But beyond human love, this painting reminds me of the love of the Lord. His love is deeper than anything we can offer one another. It does not disappear when we are wounded, wandering, or difficult to love. He remains.

The layers of red are more than color. They are layers of love—warmth, passion, grief, devotion, and sacrifice—woven together to remind me that true love is not simply found in being there when things are beautiful, but in choosing to remain through every season.
